Every town worthy of the name deserves a proper square – a place to gather, to meet, to haggle over the price of eggs or to address the pressing issues that concerns the local citizenry. That’s true by day, night, as an unseasonable winter grips this otherwise pleasant burg, or even when the centrepiece of this civic plaza is taken up not by a pleasantly burbling fountain, but rather by an ominous scaffold. Atop it, a fearsome, sharpened guillotine awaits to punish whoever finds themselves on the wrong side of the law or the wrath of the masses, be they wicked and guilty, or innocent and wronged.
